Frequently Asked Questions
How often should my chimney be swept and inspected?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that chimneys, fireplaces, and vents be inspected by a certified professional at least once a year. A chimney sweep should be performed as soon as soot or creosote buildup reaches 1/8 inches, or once a year, whichever comes first. Even if you rarely use your fireplace, animals and debris can block the flue.
Do I need an inspection if I never use my fireplace?
Yes. Even if you never use it, chimneys are exposed to the elements. Animals can build nests, and bricks or mortar can deteriorate, requiring maintenance. Additionally, many homes use the chimney to vent the hot water tank and/or furnace which are in use regardless of your fireplace usage.
What is the difference between a Level 1, 2, and 3 inspection?
A Level 1 is an annual visual check for standard maintenance. A Level 2 includes video scanning of the flue and is required by fire code when buying/selling a home, adding a new appliance, or after a chimney fire. Level 3 involves accessing and removing concealed portions of the chimney structure (like tearing down a crown).
How long does an inspection or sweep take?
A standard visual inspection and sweep typically takes between 45 to 60 minutes, assuming there are no major blockages or complex structural issues. Every home is different so we allot a two hour block to ensure your technician has plenty of time to determine what your chimney needs and to communicate those needs to you!
